"Failed to create report instance. Object with ID xxx and type 57 (DBMS) is not found in the metadata. It may have been deleted" message occurs when trying to add Teradata as an external data source in MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop 10.x

Jaime Perez

Vice President, Product Owner • MicroStrategy

Description

  1. After a user installs Strategy Analytics Desktop 10.x and tries to add Teradata as an external data source, the following error message is seen:

"Failed to create report instance."

  1. When the user proceeds to click on the details button, the user will review the following error message:

"Object with ID xxx and type 57 (DBMS) is not found in the metadata. It may have been deleted."

Why is this happening?

In this particular case, the issue is specific to choosing Teradata as the data source. Choosing any other data source will not trigger this error. However, it is possible that similar errors will be seen for other similar actions done through Desktop.
This specific message is due to an incomplete uninstallation of previous versions of Strategy Analytics Desktop installed on the machine. The underlying cause is an old object in the user machine's appdata files that was not deleted properly. When launching the new 10.4 copy of Strategy Analytics Desktop, the version would try load this file since there is no metadata connection and everything should be in cache. Here, the object that caused the error was an old DBMS object for Teradata 13.

Solution

  1. Clear out the objects from the temporary folder in this location:

C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\MicroStrategy\Strategy Desktop\InMEMMD.

If the solution above does not resolve the issue, consider calling Strategy Technical Support with results or output of following the above solution or workaround steps.
