SYMPTOM
After uninstalling Usher Server in Strategy 10.5 either by deselecting it during an upgrade from a previous Strategy version or by running a modify Install to remove it, it may be seen that the Tomcat service installed during a Strategy Express Install (from 10.5 or a previous version) fails to start.
CAUSE
This issue is caused by a known defect in the Strategy 10.5 installation routine. In Strategy 10.3, when Usher Server is uninstalled, MySQL and Tomcat are removed with it (since they were installed with it). In Strategy 10.5, the link between Usher Server, MySQL, and Tomcat was removed so that Strategy Analytics Server products can continue to take advantage of MySQL and Tomcat even if Usher Server is uninstalled. This defect is the result of the installation routine incorrectly removing some registry entries related to Tomcat when Usher Server is uninstalled.
ACTION
The issue discussed in this technical note has been fixed in Strategy 10.5 and higher
WORKAROUND
The registry entries for Tomcat can be replaced, allowing the Tomcat service to start up again. To do so, download and run the Tomcat8Parameters.reg file attached to this technical note in .zip format. If Strategy and Tomcat were installed in non-default locations, the file paths in the Tomcat8Parameters.reg file should be modified to match the actual installation location prior to running the file.
WARNING:
Modifying registry values incorrectly may cause serious, system-wide problems that may require the re-installation of a Microsoft Windows operating system. Any change on the registry will be performed at the user's own risk. Since these are user-initiated changes, they are not covered by any Strategy warranty. The user should backup the registry prior to alterations.
