SYMPTOM
The Strategy ODBC driver for Informix XPS is shipped with Strategy products and is used to facilitate connectivity to an Informix Extended Parallel Server (XPS) database. This driver is manufactured by DataDirect Technologies. This driver is called 'Strategy ODBC driver for Informix XPS' in Strategy 9.4.x 10.x.

User attempts to connect to an Informix XPS database using the Strategy ODBC driver for Informix XPS on Windows and obtains the following error:

"Cannot locate xps service/tcp service in /etc/services.

Unknown error message 11004"

This error is obtained when attempting to connect from the Strategy Connectivity Configuration Wizard (when attempting to test the connection) as well as from the Strategy DB Query Tool.

CAUSE
The Strategy ODBC driver for Informix XPS requires an entry for the Informix database service in the services file on Windows. If this entry is not present, the above error occurs.

ACTION
Perform one of the following actions to resolve the issue:

  • Go to the file called ‘services’ which is located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc. Add the following entry (assuming the Service Name is ‘xps’):

    xps           <service port number>/tcp

The following is an example entry where the service port number is 50100 (the comment part “#Informix XPS” is optional and user can write whatever describes the service best or leave it blank):

    xps           50100/tcp                   #Informix XPS

    OR

  • Directly use the service port number in the ‘Service Name’ field of the DSN instead of the service name. For the above example, replace xps by 50100 in the ‘Service Name’ field of the DSN.
