KB311084: MicroStrategy Intelligence Server memory usage continues to increase on AIX environments

Community Admin

• Strategy

When running MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 10.3 - 10.4 on AIX environments users may notice much higher memory usage compared to previous releases and that memory consumption continues to increase.

SYMPTOM
When running Strategy Intelligence Server 10.3 - 10.4 on AIX environments users may notice much higher memory usage compared to previous releases and that memory consumption continues to increase.

In order to determine if this issue is occurring in an environment, the following steps can be taken:

  • Enable Performance Counters per KB19155
  • Capture at least 1 days worth of data

Once the data has been captured, graph out the following counters:

  • Process Size(MB)
  • Process RSS(MB)
  • Total in-user memory(KB) in server process heap
  • Total cached memory (KB) in server process heap

The results should show that Process Size and RSS continue to increase even after Smartheap allocated memory has stabilized as shown below:

CAUSE
The issue is caused by a compiler bug on AIX , that is causing memory to be allocated outside of Smartheap. This memory is not governed, and keeps increasing over time. This problem is not present in Strategy 10.3 - 10.4 running on any other Operating System.

ACTION
This issue has been fixed in Strategy versions 10.3 (10.3 Hotfix 2) and 10.4 (10.4 Hotfix 1).
Upgrade to this version to take advantage of the fix.
The Strategy internal reference number for this issue is DE33554.
