KB31113: Excel filenames with more than 11 double byte characters such as Chinese, Korean, and Japanese are truncated when exporting from MicroStrategy Web

This article details an issue when exporting Excel files with filenames that contain more than 11 double-byte characters (22 bytes total) in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese using MicroStrategy Web.

Description

When you export an Excel file using Strategy Web 9.x and 10.x, the Excel filename is truncated if the report name contains more than 11 double byte characters. This includes, but is not limited to Chinese. Korean, and Japanese. In this article, Korean is used as an example to illustrate this behavior.

Steps to reproduce

  • Create a report with a filename containing more than 11 Korean double-byte characters (22 bytes total) such as "일이삼사오육칠팔구십일이삼사오육칠팔구십일이삼사오육칠팔구십"  In this example, the report name is 30 double characters, which is 60 bytes.
  • Export the report from Web as plain text or Excel with formatting.
  • Notice the filename is truncated after 11 characters (22 bytes total). The filename is now "일이삼사오육칠팔구십일.xls"

  • The truncation does not occur when exporting from Strategy Desktop.

Why is this happening?

This is known browser limitation when using Internet Explorer, Firefox so on.

Workaround

Rename the Excel file during the export or after the file is exported.

Solution

In Strategy 2019 Update 2 or higher, the filename character limit is 100, instead of 11, for Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. Upgrade to Strategy 2019 Update 2 to take advantage of this fix.
