MicroStrategy Developer crashes in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x and 10.x (up to 10.4 GA) after installing a Microsoft Windows Security Update and running certain reports to Grid View.

SUMMARY
This Technical Note describes an issue where Strategy Developer crashes after installing a Microsoft Windows Security Update in Strategy 9.4.x and 10.x (up to 10.4 GA).

DESCRIPTION
In Strategy Developer 9.4.x and 10.x (up to 10.4 GA), the program will crash when running certain reports or making certain manipulations, after installing a Microsoft Windows Security Update (one of the updates is KB3193494 but it depends on the version of Windows). The screenshots below show the Windows update and the crash behavior.

CAUSE
This is a known issue between the Strategy product and the new Microsoft security update.
Another issue seen between the Strategy product and the Microsoft security update is outlined in KB310748: Drag and Drop functionality does not work in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x, 9.5.x, and 10.x after installing the Microsoft Windows Update Security fix KB3184122.

ACTION
This issue has been addressed in Strategy 10.4 HotFix 1 and 10.5.  Upgrade to this version to take advantage of the fix. If you cannot upgrade to that version another fix is available through modifying a default file installed by Strategy. Follow the instructions below to modify the file and apply the fix.

1) On both the I-server and Developer machines, Navigate to:
Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Strategy and find the file called DTMAPPING.PDS
Linux: Directly inside the main Strategy install directory (e.g.
/opt/MicroStrategy/DTMAPPING.PDS)
2) Make a backup copy of DTMAPPING.PDS and place it elsewhere.
3) On both the I-server and client machine, edit the original and replace the lines containing the following:

<MSI TYPE="DssDataTypeDECFLOAT" DBTYPE="BIGDECIMAL" MAXPRECISION="DDT_NO_MAXPRECISION" NEXTTYPE="DDT_NULL_NEXTTYPE" />

With this:

<MSI TYPE="DssDataTypeBigDecimal" DBTYPE="DECFLOAT" MAXPRECISION="DDT_NO_MAXPRECISION" NEXTTYPE="DDT_NULL_NEXTTYPE" />

 NOTE: There will be multiple entries within the file.

4) Restart the Intelligence Server and reopen Strategy Developer.
5) Try to reproduce the issue and see that it no longer occurs.

WORKAROUND
A workaround which can be used is to uninstall the Microsoft security update. This permits the reports to run without crashing Strategy Developer until a fix from above can be applied.
