KB31831: What is "NetChunkingSize" and what is it used for in MicroStrategy 9.x and later

The following knowledge base article discusses the registry key NetChunkingSize which can be used to increase/decrease the size of data chunks sent across the network.

Introduction:
The Network Classes layer in Strategy Intelligence Server is responsible for the communication between the Strategy Intelligence Server and the client (Strategy Desktop, Strategy Enterprise Manager, Strategy Web etc.). If the amount of data that the Intelligence Server sends back to the client is large, it can put additional load on the network.

Strategy 9.x and later provides the ability for network chunking. This process is transparent to the end user and is controlled by a registry setting called NetChunkingSize. When Strategy Intelligence Server sends data back to the client, the data is broken into smaller chunks based on NetChunkingSize. The default size for this setting is 20 MB.

For example, say a user sends a 120 MB report request from Strategy Desktop to Strategy Intelligence Server. When Strategy Intelligence Server attempts to send the data back to Strategy Desktop, it breaks the 120 MB data into six chunks of 20 MB each. Each of these chunks is then sent across the network to the client.

When to use
NetChunkingSize is used when the data sent from Strategy Intelligence Server is too large for the client machine to handle (due to lack of sufficient buffer space). Enabling this setting gives Strategy Intelligence Server the ability to break the data down into smaller chunks before sending it across the network. A lower value for this setting will create more data chunks for Strategy Intelligence Server to send across the network making it easier on the network to handle large amount of data.

How to enable NetChunkingSize
The steps below discuss how the net chunking, which by default creates 20MB chunks to clients from the Intelligence Server may be changed to a lower value. This setting is persisted in the Windows registry for Strategy Intelligence Server on Windows and in the MSIReg.reg file for the Intelligence Server Universal on Unix/Linux. The example below shows users how to set the chunking size to 15MB, but users experiencing persistent problems may set this as low as 1MB.
Note: This setting must be enabled on the Strategy Intelligence Server machine.

A. For Strategy Intelligence Server on Windows

  • Go to 'Start' > 'Run', and type in 'regedit'.
  • Navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\Data Sources\CastorServer'.
  • Locate the entry 'NetChunkingSize'.
Note: If users cannot locate the entry, create a DWORD entry 'NetChunkingSize'.
  • Set the value to 15 MB in Decimal which equates to 'f'  in Hexadecimal.

  • Close the Registry Editor.
  • Restart the Strategy Intelligence Server.

B. For Strategy Intelligence Server on UNIX :

  1. Close all Strategy applications.
  2. Make a backup of the file MSIReg.reg before making any changes. This file is located in the Strategy home directory specified during installation.
  3. Edit the MSIReg.reg file in any text editor.
  4. Search for the key 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\Data Sources\CastorServer\'
  5. Locate the entry 'NetChunkingSize'.
Note: If users cannot locate the entry, create a DWORD entry 'NetChunkingSize' by inserting the following text:

    "NetChunkingSize"=dword:0000000f

  6. Set the value to 15 MB in Decimal which equates to 'f'  in Hexadecimal
  7. Save the change to MSIReg.reg file.
  8. Restart the Strategy Intelligence Server

Registry Modification:
WARNING:
Modifying registry values incorrectly may cause serious, system-wide problems that may require the re-installation of Microsoft Windows. Any edit of the registry is done at the user's own risk. Since these are user-initiated changes, they are not covered by any Strategy warranty.
