KB31978: How to display accumulative metric data based on time attribute on report in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4

First requirement: How to build a report needs the metric displays the accumulative data from the beginning date.
Build a report that needs the metric displays the sum of the values from the beginning data in the lookup table until the particular time attribute on the report.
For example: as the image shown below, the right report displays the 'Units Sold' for each month; the left report displays the accumulative 'Units Sold' from the beginning data in the month lookup table until the month on each row:

Following steps illustrate the detail steps of how to create a report to achieve the above requirement with Strategy Tutorial Project:

  1. Go to Fact folder in Desktop, select the lookup table for the month 'Lu_month', and create table alias, name it 'Month from beginning', as shown below:
  2. Create a new month attribute, map ID and DESC to the 'Month from beginning' lookup table, name it 'Month count from beginning', as shown below:
  3. Create a new hierarchy and add the 'Month count from beginning' attribute in it, name it ' Time count from beginning'.
  4. Create the first filter (need to create two filters totally), detail criteria as shown below:
    • Attribute qualification on 'Month count from beginning'
    • Qualify on elements
    • Operator: In list
    • Click Prompt button, also select ' Month count from beginning' attribute, check List all elements option
    • Name this filter 'Count from beginning F1
  5. Create the second filter, attribute qualification on the 'Month' attribute, as showing below, name it 'Count from beginning F2', as shown below:
  6. Create a blank report and add attribute 'Month count from beginning', also add metric 'Units sold'. Add the two filters too, as shown below:

Adding other time attribute, such as quarter and year, simply repeat steps 1 to 5.

Second requirement: How to add another metric displays the value relates to the report level on the same report.
Add another metric and display the metric value relates to the report level, which means this metric doesn't accumulative the data from beginning. The metric has to ignore the report level filter, only quote to its own condition.
Performing the following steps to achieve this requirements. Take 'Revenue' metric as an example.

  • Run the report to check the result, create another normal Unit sold based on Month attribute for compare, as shown below:

    • Create a new filter, name it F3, detail criteria as shown below:
      • Attribute qualification on the 'Month' attribute
      • Qualify on ID
      • Operator: Exactly
      • Custom: @ID
    • Edit 'Revenue' metric
      • Level (Dimensionality) = Report Level
      • condition =
      • Transformation = (nothing)
      • Click on Advanced button, change Embedding method to 'Merge into new'.
    • Run the report, the result shall be looking as following image, compare with the Revenue (count from beginning) to see the difference, as shown below:
