KB320036: D3.tip Tooltip Does Not Display After Integrating D3 Visualization into MicroStrategy Web 10.5

• Strategy

An explanation and workaround to why leveraging the D3.tip visualization addon doesn't display in MicroStrategy Web, while the same code may have worked before integration.

SUMMARY:
D3.tip is a 3rd-party addon for visualizations that use the D3 visualization library, which can be used to render tooltips with relative ease.

D3 visualizations can be integrated with Strategy using the Strategy HTML5 Visualization SDK and the Visualization Builder tool.

SYMPTOM:
After integrating a visualization that implements D3.tip functionality into Strategy, the visualization renders correctly but the tooltips are not visible.

CAUSE:
D3.tip functions by appending a div on <body>. The situation is that Strategy Web already has <div> elements on top of the <body> element that will overlap the tooltip <div> element.

WORKAROUND:
Override the overlapping order using the CSS property z-index, bringing the tooltips to the top layer:

.d3-tip {z-index:1;}
