KB32261: Deliveries are not successful for e-mails sent for Web Subscription after upgrading to MicroStrategy 9.0.0

Deliveries are not successful for e-mails sent for Web Subscription after upgrading to MicroStrategy 9.0.0

SYMPTOM:
Users observe that they are unable to successfully deliver out e-mails through Web Subscriptions after upgrading to Strategy 9.0.0. The product environment remains the same as it was prior to the upgrade to Strategy 9,  deliveries were successful when using Strategy version 8.1.x.

CAUSE:
One likely cause of this issue is that the Strategy Intelligence Server isn't registered on SMTP Server and there is no network connections possible between the Intelligence Server and the SMTP Server. This behavior is different because in Strategy 8.1.x, web deliveries ("Send Now" and Web Subscriptions) were handled by the Strategy Narrowcast Server.

In Strategy 9.0.0, web delivery functionality has been moved to a new Intelligence Server integrated feature called Distribution Service. Users should refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base document for more details:

  • KB30917 "Feature differences between the Strategy Narrowcast Server Web Deliveries in Strategy 8.1.x and Strategy Distribution Services in Strategy 9.x"

This means in version 9.0.0, Intelligence Server will take the responsibility to communicate with SMTP server to send out the e-mail instead of the Strategy Narrowcast Server.

ACTION:
Users should investigate the following actions to solve this issue:

  • Ensure that no firewalls, or restrictions are disabling network communication between the Intelligence Server and the SMTP Server.
  • Register the Strategy Intelligence Server on the SMTP Server (if applicable), so that the SMTP Server can e-mail delivery service for Intelligence Server.
