KB32379: How to enable users to drill outside the Intelligent cube filter criteria in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x and newer?

Stefan Zepeda

This KB explains how to enable users to drill outside the Intelligent cube filter criteria.

LIMITATION:
The ability to drill outside the filter criteria defined in the Intelligent Cube is not available as the report will only allow you to drill within the filter criteria.Dynamic sourcing may be used as a workaround in order to be able to drill outside the Intelligent Cube filter criteria as explained in the below Strategy Tutorial example.

WORKAROUND:
The requirement is to find out if a report hitting an intelligent cube can dynamically source data from the data warehouse if the filter condition is changed.  Here is a scenario:

  1. Create the following Intelligent Cube: Sub-Category, Call Center, Week, Revenue, Filter = Week37
  2. Enable the Intelligent Cube to use dynamic sourcing.
  3. Create a report which will source data from this cube with the following: Sub-Category, Week, Filter = Wk37.  The report should be created as a general report and not as a subset report from the Cube`s definition.
  4. Run the report created in step 3.  Because dynamic sourcing is enabled, the report will automatically hit the cube.
  5. Change the week filter to Week36.
  6. Run the report, the report now automatically goes to the data warehouse to gather the data as the cube only contains information for Week 37 and the drilled report needs information for week 36.

This will allow users to create reports that use the Intelligent Cube and also hit the data warehouse when the Intelligent Cube does not contain the requested information.
