KB324829: "Login failed" error when connecting to an Essbase Server through the MDX Cube Catalog, in MicroStrategy Developer

This technical note documents an issue that occurs when trying to connect to the MDX Cube Catalog to import cubes from an Essbase data source.

SUMMARY:
This technical note documents an issue that occurs when trying to connect to the MDX Cube Catalog to import cubes from an Essbase data source.

SYMPTOM:
After creating a database instance to connect to an Essbase data source, the MDX Cube Catalog cannot be accessed and the following error appears:

ka04W000000uGBGQA2_0EM440000002Byu.jpeg

Error in accessing information from the external data source.

Local////Error(1042032) Network Error: Failed to retrieve host information for [provider=essbase]

Local////Error(1030818) Login failed. Please check if server and port are correct.

ACTION:
This error appears because the Essbase server name is not correctly specified in the Database Instance connection details. The server name should be added to the "Host Name" field, as shown below:

ka04W000000uGBGQA2_0EM440000002Byw.jpeg

When using the XMLA provider instead of the Strategy MDX Cube Provider, the following syntax is also allowed:

Provider=Essbase;Data Source=essbaseSeverName

However, using the above syntax along with the Strategy MDX Cube Provider will return a Login Failed error.
