KB326530: How to connect to Jethro via JDBC in MicroStrategy Secure Enterprise running on Linux Operating Systems

Community Admin

• Strategy

This article details how to connect to MicroStrategy with Jethro via ODBC or JDBC on Linux operating systems.

There are two methods available to connect Strategy with Jethro: ODBC and JDBC. Choose one preferred type of connection and then define it through Strategy Developer as a database instance. After that, a short configuration is required to be made on the VLDB settings.
This article explains in detail, how to establish each type of these connection methods and how to configure the required VLDB settings.

  • Create an ODBC connection
  • Create a JDBC connection
  • Required VLDB settings

Create an ODBC connection

  • Create an ODBC DSN connection.
  • Open Strategy Developer > Strategy Analytics Modules > Administration > Configuration Managers > Database Instances.
  • Create a new database instance.
  • Under the General tab, choose Generic DBMS under Database connection type.

  • Under the Advanced tab, enter def_schema as the Database name.

  • Go back to the General tab and create a new Database connection.
  • Choose the ODBC DSN that was set in step 1.
  • Create a new Default database login name. Default values are user=jethro & password=jethro.
  • Click OK and edit the VLDB settings for that Database Instance.

Create a JDBC connection

Note: Do not use < or > in your final string.
Example:

JDBC;MSTR_JDBC_JAR_FOLDER=C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MicroStrategy\JDBC;DRIVER=com.jethrodata.JethroDriver;URL={jdbc:JethroData://123.45.67.890:9111/demo};

  1. Open Strategy Developer > Strategy Analytics Modules > Administration > Configuration Managers > Database Instances.
  2. Create a new database instance
  3. Under the General tab, choose Generic DBMS under Database connection type.
  4. Under the Advanced tab, enter def_schema as the Database name.
  5. Go back to the General tab and create a new Database connection.
Important: Do not choose an ODBC DSN connection. Leave it empty.
  6. Download Jethro's JDBC files. Instructions can be found here.
  7. Extract the files into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MicroStrategy\JDBC folder or any other folder you prefer.
  8. Go to the Advanced tab and use the following line as the connection string:

    JDBC;MSTR_JDBC_JAR_FOLDER=C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MicroStrategy\JDBC;DRIVER=com.jethrodata.JethroDriver;URL={jdbc:JethroData://<URL>:<port>/<Instance name>};

  9. Replace <URL> with your Jethro machine IP
  10. Replace <port> with your Jethro instance port. This is usually 9111. You can find the instance port number by running service jethro status on the Jethro Linux machine.
  11. Replace <Instance name> with the name of your instance.
  12. Create a new Default database login name. Default values are user=jethro & password=jethro.
  13. Click OK and edit the VLDB settings for that database instance.

Required VLDB settings

  1. Right-click the database instance to configure and choose VLDB Properties.
  2. Choose Tools > Show advanced settings.
  3. Update the following two settings, to make sure that Strategy uses views when working with Jethro, instead of temp tables.
  4. Click Save and Close.
