SYMPTOM:
Strategy users can create data import cubes in Strategy Web through the data import functionality. Users can use their own queries to build cubes using the Database option. Creating a subtotal defined by a metric created in the cube and adding this subtotal to the list of available subtotals for the metric causes a circular reference. After adding this subtotal to the list of available subtotals for the metric and executing a document containing the cube, the Strategy Intelligence Server crashes.
Note that this crash is specific to using a data import cube. If a freeform SQL report is used as the underlying dataset instead of a data import cube, the report displays an error that the metric is defined in terms of itself rather than the intelligence server crashing. The issue is also specific to executing a document containing the circular reference. If the same procedure is followed for a report, the same error stating that the metric is defined in terms of itself will be displayed.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
select a11.[CATEGORY_ID] AS CATEGORY_ID, max(a12.[CATEGORY_DESC]) AS CATEGORY_DESC, sum(a11.[TOT_COST]) AS CIRCULAR from [YR_CATEGORY_SLS] a11, [LU_CATEGORY] a12 where a11.[CATEGORY_ID] = a12.[CATEGORY_ID] group by a11.[CATEGORY_ID]

CAUSE:
This is an identified defect in Strategy Web 10.x.
ACTION:
Currently this issue is still being reviewed for feasibility by our Technology team and it is not scoped for any upcoming scheduled Strategy release.
WORKAROUND:
Modify the subtotal definition to Sum(x){~%} to eliminate the circular reference and prevent the intelligence server crash.
