KB32855: The error "Transmission to primary location failed. Transmission to backup failed." is seen and users are unable to deliver data to a file location when using MicroStrategy Distribution Services

The error "Transmission to primary location failed. Transmission to backup failed." is seen and users are unable to deliver data to a file location when using MicroStrategy Distribution Services 9.x.

Symptom

Users may observe the following error message when trying  to send a report or document to file using the subscription feature in Strategy Distribution Services 9.x. The following lines are seen when the delivery fails:

Sample Code/Error
2010-02-24 21:40:40.059-06:00 Distribution Service: MSIDeliveryEngine::hDelivery: Delivery Failed. Error string from ExecuteMultiProcess Transmission to primary location failed. Transmission to backup failed. Transmission to backup failed.

Cause

This error message is indicating that the Intelligence Server was unable to complete the delivery of the file to the primary or backup location as specified in the device. These locations are set in the device properties as shown in the screenshots below.

Action

Users should determine why the specific location is unavailable at the time of the subscription delivery. One potential reason is permissions - the Intelligence Server maybe running under an account that does not have permissions to access the file location specified.
For the Intelligence Server Universal running on a Unix/Linux operating system, there is no ability to access a shared network path specified using backslashes '\\' as is possible on a Windows based Intelligence Server. Users should specify a local filesystem and share that local filesystem using Samba or some other mechanism.
