KB33214: When one of the ID forms of a compound attribute doesn`t exist on a fact table, MicroStrategy Desktop incorrectly shows that attribute in the fact entry level of that fact.

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

Even though all the ID forms of a compound key attribute do not exist on the fact table, that attribute is seen in the fact entry level of that fact table

SYMPTOM
Even though all the ID forms of a compound key attribute do not exist on the fact table, that attribute is seen in the fact entry level of that fact table.
This issue is illustrated below with an example from the Strategy Tutorial project.

  1. Create a table in the Strategy Tutorial Warehouse with column called 'DIST_CTR_ID' and 'FACT_COL'
Note: DIST_CTR_ID is the name of the column that is used in defining the ID of the attribute 'Distribution Center'
  • Import the above table into the Strategy Tutorial Project.
  • Note that the table from Step 1 is seen as the source table for one of the ID forms of the attribute 'Distribution Center'
  • Create a fact called 'Test_Fact' using the column 'FACT_COL' from the table from Step 1.
  • Update the schema.
  • Edit the fact from Step 3 and look at the fact entry level. The attribute 'Distribution Center' is incorrectly seen as the fact entry level. DIstribution Center attribute has 2 ID columns - only if both the ID columns existed on this fact table, the attribute should be seen in the fact entry level.

If a metric based on the above fact is used along with the Distribution Center attribute, an error is received as expected. The error states that this fact does not exist at the level of the Distribution Center attribute.

CAUSE
This is a known issue with Strategy Developer. The attribute is incorrectly seen as the fact entry level. The SQL generation is as expected and the engine correctly figures out that this fact table cannot support the distribution center attribute.
ACTION
Strategy will continue to investigate and post updates as soon as they are available.
