Detail header and footer of Report Services Documents can be set to be rendered horizontally. When this option is used, grids can be placed side by side without overlapping each other:

  • Create a report with Year in the rows, and Month in the columns. Add an attribute element prompt on Month.
  • Create another report with Year in the rows, and Revenue in the columns.
  • Create a document using these two reports as datasets.

  • Right click on the Document Header section, select "Detail Properties," and check "Render Detail header and footer horizontally".

  • Place the first dataset in the Document header.
  • Add a section to the right.

  • Add the second dataset to the section just added. The final result should look similar to the following:

  • Execute the document and select one element as a prompt answer.  The grids should display without overlap:

  • Reprompt the document and select more elements.  Notice that the grid became wider, but the second grid is still positioned with respect to the first grid without overlap.
