KB33873: Users that do not have write permissions to a Report Services document are unable to schedule the document or send it via Send Now if they performed manipulations first in MicroStrategy Web

Users that do not have write permissions to a Report Services document are unable to schedule the document or send it via Send Now if they performed manipulations first in MicroStrategy Web

SYMPTOM:
Users that do not have write permissions to a Report Services Document object can still execute the document in Strategy Web 9.0.1.  However, after making a simple manipulation to the document like changing a selector or switching the zoom factor, when attempting to Send Now or schedule the document, the user will be prompted to save the document:

Sample Code/Error
You must save the report/document before you can send it.

However, since the user has no write permissions to this object, they get another error when clicking save, like shown in the image below.

Sample Code/Error
Access denied.
The following privilege is required to access the resource you requested: save-report Please contact the Strategy Server Administrator to verify the required privilege is granted.

This effectively prevents the user from sending the document or scheduling it, as the only other option is the cancel the action.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Follow these steps to reproduce the issue.

  • In Strategy Developer, create a new user and give them Web Reporter privileges. This will allow them to execute any report and have 'Schedule delivery to History list'.
  • Create a test report with one attribute and convert it into a document.
  • Add a selector on that attribute that targets the report.
  • Save the document.
  • Right click on the document and choose > Properties > Security.
  • Add the new user to the list of users and modify the permissions using the Custom object Access Control Entry.
  • Deny Write permissions for that user, like shown in the image below:

  • Log into Strategy Web with the new user.
  • Run the test document.
  • Perform a manipulation like modifying the zoom or making a selector change.
  • From the Home toolbar, click on 'Schedule delivery to History List'.
  • Notice the prompt with the options of 'Save' and 'Cancel' will display.  Selecting 'Cancel' will cancel the schedule delivery and 'Save' will throw an error.

CAUSE:
This is a known issue with Strategy Web 9.0.1 that affects manipulations in Report Services Documents for users that do not have write access to the object. This works correctly for regular reports.  Manipulations such as column width or autostyle selection can be done to the report and the schedule will not prompt to save the report. The resulting delivery will contain the new manipulations.

ACTION:
Currently this issue is still being reviewed for feasibility by our Technology team and is not scoped for any upcoming scheduled Strategy release.

WORKAROUND:
The schedule will work if no manipulations have been done to the document. Re-run the document and schedule the delivery first. The manipulations will have to be done after the schedule has been delivered.  Alternatively, allow the user write access to the document in order for them to save their changes.
