Error when attempting to log in to MicroStrategy Web 9.3.x using Windows Authentication: 'Can not find the LDAP user/group. Please contact the administrator.'

SYMPTOM:
When attempting to use Windows Authentication to log in to Strategy Web 9.0.x as a user linked to an LDAP user, the following error is received:

The Web Server encountered an unknown runtime error.

(Can not find the LDAP user/group. Please contact the administrator.)

The same user can successfully log in to Desktop and Web using LDAP authentication, and in to Desktop using Windows authentication.

CAUSE:
This issue occurs when 'Anonymous access' is enabled under IIS Anonymous access and authentication control options. When Anonymous access is enabled, Strategy will try to authenticate against the anonymous user. If the anonymous user is not associated with an LDAP user, the error will be returned.

ACTION:
To resolve this issue, disable Anonymous access. To do this, take the following steps:

  • Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Internet Information Services and find the Strategy virtual directory.
  • Right click and select Properties.
  • Edit the Anonymous access and authentication control.

  • Uncheck 'Anonymous access'

Once these steps have been completed, it should be possible to log in to Web successfully using Windows Authentication.
