KB35676: "SQL Generation Complete QueryEngine encountered error: Connect failed." error message appears when executing a report in MicroStrategy 10.x

This article describes an issue where a DSN error can be seen for a report.

SYMPTOM:
When the user executes a report  which only utilizes tables from a secondary database instance, the error below occurs:

Error: SQL Generation Complete
QueryEngine encountered error: Connect failed.
Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLDriverConnect. Data source name not found and no default driver specified Connection String: DSN=mstr1;UID=;..

In addition, the DSN listed in the error message is from the primary database instance.

CAUSE:
This is a known issue with Strategy 10.x. When the user runs a report which uses a secondary database instance, the Strategy process will first reach the primary database instance DSN and then move to the secondary database instance DSN. If the primary database DSN cannot be found, then the report execution fails before connecting to the secondary database instance DSN.

ACTION:
To resolve this issue, please make sure the connection to the primary database instance exists and is valid.
