KB36354: How to filter on different parameters and display the related data for the same report on two separate panels in a Report Services Document in MicroStrategy Web

SYMPTOM
This technical Note explains how to display data for the same report with different filtering conditions in two separate panels in a Document in Strategy Web 9.0.x, when there is no data available for one of the attribute elements.
 
STEPS TO REPRODUCE

• Create a new Table with Region, Year and Revenue columns. Region West does not have data for year 2008 ie no data row, while for Region South there is data for years 2008, 2009, 2010.

• Add the table through Warehouse Catalog, create attributes Region and Year, and fact Revenue. Update schema. Create metric Revenue
• Create a report with Region in rows, Year and Revenue in columns. Set Report data Options - Null Display to 0 for all, and Attribute join type to 'Preserve lookup table elements joined to final pass result table based on template attribute with filter' to ensure that 0 is displayed in the grid where no values exist.
   
  

• Create a dashboard and add the report to the first panel. Select the dataset and with a rmc select set view filter and assign West. Add another panel and add the same report to this panel and set view filter to South. Add a Panel Selector.
   
  

• Add Selector targetting all reports for Year (drop down).
   
  

• Add another Selector targetting panel, for Regions West and South.
• Execute the dashboard in Web. When South is selected in the radio button selector, with year 2008, data is displayed as shown below:

  When West is selected on radion button selector, with 2008 as the default year selected, the following message is displayed:

  No data returned by this view. This might be because the applied filter excludes all data.
