KB36452: In MicroStrategy using SAP BW data source, reports with structures and metric qualifications return incorrect data.

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This article notes a scenario where SAP returns invalid results

Introduction:
With Strategy, a VLDB property exists for reports executing against MDX data sources. This property is called 'MDX TopCount Support' and is available at the report level and database instance level. This controls whether the MDX function TopCount is used in place of Rank and Order to support features such as metric qualifications. The default option is to use the function TopCount instead of functions Rank and Order. For more information, refer to the Strategy System Administration Guide Volume 1 product manual.

SYMPTOM
In Strategy using SAP BW datasource, reports with SAP structures and rank metric qualifications return incorrect results when MDX Rank and Order is used.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

  • Consider the following report which has a SAP structure object and metrics: Revenue and M01 = Rank(Revenue). Metric M01 is a compound metric based on SAP metrics and is defined as a non-smart metric so that the rank is calculated by the SAP datasource.

  • Add a metric qualification filter in the report as: M01 < 3.
  • Executing the report with metric filter qualification yields the correct results as shown below.

CAUSE
The required MDX is generated by Strategy correctly. However, SAP BW does not yield the correct results when using MDX functions Rank and Order.

ACTION
One of the following actions can be taken to apply the metric qualification correctly.

1. If the rank metric needs to be calculated by the SAP BW datasource, MDX TopCount VLDB property  should be set to the default value: Use TopCount instead of Rank and Order.

OR

2. If it is not necessary for the rank metric to be calculated by the SAP BW datasource, the rank metric (which is a compound metric based on SAP BW metrics) can be defined to be a smart metric so that Strategy analytical engine calculates the metric and applies the filter.

  • Change the VLDB property for MDX TopCount Support from the default value to 'Do not use TopCount in the place of Rank and Order'. The newly executed report does not consider the filter qualification and displays all the structure elements.
