This Knowledge Base article describes a known issue that affects duplicated projects in MicroStrategy 10.4 HF5 and 10.9. There's a workaround to it and a fix is scheduled for an upcoming MicroStrategy release.

SYMPTOM:
Users may notice that after duplicating a project, in the new project it is impossible to create new metrics because of an error that occurs when validating the formula.
The error in Developer is:

ka04W000000OffoQAC_0EM44000000Q7s9.png

Formula Incorrect

The error in Strategy Web is:

ka04W000000OffoQAC_0EM44000000Q7s4.png

Validation failed with syntax error!
Cannot find a function corresponding to + .Searching for + resulted in no matches

Additional variations of the error may exist depending upon the metric's formula.  For example, "Cannot find a function corresponding to Sum.  Searching for 'Sum' resulted in no matches."
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Duplicate Tutorial project
  2. Open the new duplicated project either in Developer or Strategy Web
  3. Create a metric, e.g. Revenue (metric) + Profit (metric) and notice the error

CAUSE:
This is an identified defect in Strategy 10.4 HF5 and 10.9.
ACTION:
This issue is fixed in Strategy 10.4 Hotfix 6 and 10.10.  Please upgrade to take advantage of the fix.
WORKAROUND:
Restart the Intelligence Server or unload/reload the project.
