KB37140: Column/Row headers not displaying all text when exporting Report Services Document to Excel in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x - 10.x

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This technical note documents a behaviour observed when exporting a Report Services Document to Excel.

SYMPTOM:
When an attribute or metric on a report is long, after the report is placed on a Report Services Document and exported to Excel, the row cell heights do not get resized automatically to fit the text. It works fine in PDF and exporting the report directly to Excel.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Create a new report with an attribute in the row, year on the column, and a metric (with a long name like 'Quarterly Standard Deviation of Daily Revenue') and save and close.
  2. Set Grid>Options>Remove extra column (Web only) for report and document.
  3. Create a new Report Services document with the report as a dataset.
  4. Place the grid on the document and export to PDF. Note that everything looks fine in the export.
  5. Export document to Excel and you will see that the Excel rows does not resize to fit the entire text of the metric name.

CAUSE:
The rows are not being resized automatically because the option is not selected in the Properties for exporting to Excel.

ACTION:
Right mouse click on the document section in which the grid is placed and go to Properties > Layout > Excel > Check the option 'Automatically fit rows'.  This option will then allow Strategy to use auto-fit row heights for the document in Excel.
