KB37213: In MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.2.x and later, how does the project configuration setting "Load Intelligent Cubes on startup" work in a clustered environment?

Stefan Zepeda

Introduction:
In Strategy Intelligence Server 9.0.x clustered environment, the project configuration setting to load Intelligent cubes on startup only loads the Intelligent cubes that are present in the local node. Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge base document for more information.

KB35658: The project configuration setting for Intelligent Cubes to "Load Cubes on startup" does not load intelligent cubes in remote nodes of a cluster in Strategy 9.0.x.

Starting with Strategy Intelligence Server 9.2.0, Intelligent Cubes from the remote nodes of the cluster are also loaded into memory during Strategy Intelligence Server startup, if the option to load Intelligent cubes upon startup is checked.

  • If an Intelligent cube from the local node or remote node of a cluster is loaded in memory at the time of shutdown, it will be loaded in memory even after Strategy Intelligence Server restart.
  • If an Intelligent cube from the local node or remote node of a cluster is NOT loaded in memory at the time of shutdown, it will NOT be loaded in memory even after Strategy Intelligence Server restart.

Detailed information is provided with an example below.

  • Consider a 2-node Strategy Intelligence Server 9.2.x cluster. Consider these as Node1 and Node2
  • Publish Cube1 from Node1.
  • Publish Cube2 from Node2.
  • From the Intelligent Cube monitor of Node1 and Node 2, both the cubes are seen as loaded, as shown below.

  •
    Node2

  • Restart Strategy Intelligence Server 9.2.x on both the nodes of the cluster.
  • After restart, it is seen that the Intelligent Cubes from both the nodes are still seen as loaded on both the nodes.
  • Unload Cube1 from Node1 and also unload Cube2 from Node 2. Intelligent cube monitor on both the nodes is as shown below:

    Node1

    Node2

  • Restart Strategy Intelligence Server 9.2.x on both the nodes in the cluster. After restart, it is seen that only Cube2 is loaded into memory on Node1 and only Cube1 is loaded into memory on Node2. The intelligent cube monitor on both the nodes looks the same as what is seen in step 7.
  • In other words, the cube "loaded" status (before shutdown) will be retained on each node even after Strategy Intelligence Server 9.2.x restart, irrespective of if the Intelligent cube belongs to that node or to a remote node in the cluster.
