How to specify a Web Services URL and Web URL in a silent installation of Office 9.x?

When creating a silent installation of Office, according to the procedure outlined in: KB15524 (KB6900-8X-0161): How to create a silent installation of MicroStrategy Office 8.x and in the chapter relating to silent installations of the Installation and Configuration Guide 9.0.1, it is possible to specify the Web Services URL using the response.ini file, since this mirrors the standard installation dialogs.

As the Web URL is not set in an installation dialog, it is not available in the response.ini file.  However, it is possible to set the Web URL in a server-based Office configuration file deployed from the Web Services server, to prevent end-users from having to configure it manually. This can be achieved as outlined below:

  1. Export the existing Strategy Office settings to an XML file.
  2. Modify the XML file to specify which settings should be applied for which users, which will override or replace user settings,  and which parameters users will be permitted to modify.
  3. Deploy the file in the Office folder on the Strategy Web Services server.
  4. This will create an XML file with the settings to be pushed to the Office client.
  5. Place this file on the Web Services web server, from which the client will read the information.

More details on server-based Office configuration can be found in the Office User Guide, Appendix B. Server-based Configuration.
