"Desktop is unable to export to Excel. Specified worksheet may have merged cells in the are to which the report is being exported." error message appears when exporting a report to Excel in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x

SYMPTOM:
Exporting a report to Microsoft Excel fails with the following error in Strategy Developer 9.x

Sample Code/Error
Desktop is unable to export to Excel. Specified worksheet may have merged cells in the are to which the report is being exported.
 
CAUSE:
This issue can happen if the environment was recently upgraded from Strategy 8.1.x to 9.0.x or 9.2.x.
 
ACTION:
Users can select the Run Export to Excel/Word in 8.1.x compatibility mode check box from the project configuration to get passed this error message.
