This technical note lists the steps to replace object names in bulk using MicroStrategy Repository Translation Wizard

Users may need to replace object names in bulk.  This can be done using Strategy Repository Translation Wizard in Strategy Developer 9.4.x - 10.x.  Follow the steps below for an example of how to do this.

  • Create an empty MD shell in Microsoft Access.
  • Run Repository Translation Wizard from the Start Menu -> Programs -> Strategy-> Object Manager
  • In the "Metadata Repository" screen, select the "Project Source Name" and check the "Export Translations" option, as shown in the following screen shot:

  • In the "Languages" screen, select a project, a translation reference language and a language (choose English as default), as shown in the following screen shot:

  • In the "Select objects" screen, if one needs to select a certain type of object, check the option Use the results of a search object.  Then, click 'New' to search specific object types, as shown in the following screenshot.  For example: search all application object types whose name contains "Document".

  •
NOTE:  If all objects in the project need translation then use the Process all objects in this project option.  The Include hidden objects option will process hidden objects as well.

  • In the "Translation Database" screen, select the DSN created in step 1, as shown in the following screenshot:

  • Click on 'Next' for the next 2 screens (retain the default settings). Click 'Finish' on the following screen:

  • The Repository Translation Wizard exports other objects that are not directly exposed through the GUI (such as embedded objects).  To only translate non-embedded object names, select the rows which meet both of the following criteria:
                   a. UNIQUEKEY = '1:0:'
                   b. EMBEDDEDID = '0'

If all non-embedded object names and descriptions need to be translated then select the rows which meet both of the following criteria:

    a. UNIQUEKEY IN ( '1:0:', '1:2:' )
    b. EMBEDDEDID = '0'

  • In Access, manually replace the name (TRANSLATION column):

  • Run the Repository Translation Wizard again. This time, in the "Metadata Repository" screen, select the project source and check the 'Import Translations' option, as shown in the following screen shot:

  • In the 'Translation Database' screen, select the DSN created in step 1 and then click 'Connect'. Also, select the repository table, as shown in the following screen shot:

  • Click on 'Next' for the next 2 screens (retain default settings) and click 'Finish' in the following screen:
