KB37930: US currency symbol "$" in report is not transformed to UK currency symbol "£" after changing system locale on the machine to United Kingdom in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x-10.x.

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

The US currency symbol '$' in a metric in a report is not transformed to UK currency symbol '£' after changing system locale on the machine to United Kingdom in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x-10.x

SYMPTOM:
The US currency symbol '$' in a metric in a report is not transformed to UK currency symbol '£' after changing system locale on the machine to United Kingdom in Strategy Developer 9.4.x-10.x.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  • Create a new Revenue metric and name it Revenue-US and edit the metric formatting to currency and select '$' symbol.
  • Create a new report with Year, Day, and Revenue-US. Notice everything looks as expected.

  • Save and Close the report.
  • Under Control Panel > Regional and Languages Options, change the system locale on the machine to United Kingdom.
  • Go back to Desktop and run the report created before. Notice that the currency symbol displayed is still '$' and not '£' even though the date format has been changed automatically as shown in the image below.

CAUSE:
The currency symbol is one of the metric formatting settings, and is therefore a part of the metric object and gets stored in the metadata.

ACTION:
There are a couple of ways to change the currency symbol:
Instead of going through each report and metric to change the currency symbol, users can use the Find and Replace tool in Developer to select a certain number of metrics and change the formatting to use '£' instead of '$'. This will overwrite the metric level formatting, however if the metric was formatted through the report, it will not get overwritten as the report level changes takes precedence over the metric level.

  1. Create a separate metric to hold the UK currency symbol in current System locale.
  2. Creating new metrics in the UK System locale with currency will have '£' as the default option.
  3. Find and Replace function:

Instead of going through each report and metric to change the currency symbol, users can use the Find and Replace tool in Developer to select a certain number of metrics and change the formatting to use '£' instead of '$'. This will overwrite the metric level formatting; however if the metric was formatted through the report, it will not get overwritten as the report level changes takes precedence over the metric level.
