KB38139: Service execution finishes with error if pre/post SQL statements return empty result set and the option for the same is checked in the subscription set properties in MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server 9.x.

SYMPTOM:
Consider that a subscription set has pre/post SQL statement(s) with the Service Execution Impact option set to 'Required' with the 'Empty result set' checkbox selected in Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x as shown:

When the service which contains this subscription set executes, and the above SQL statement returns an empty result set, the service execution completes with errors. The following error is logged in the DELogs:

Sample Code/Error
:5580:Service ID Execution ID Segment ID Segmentation has been canceled because the Pre-SQL statement returned an empty result
:5580:Service ID Execution ID Segment ID Service execution finished with error.

This behavior is different than the one in Strategy Narrowcast Server 8.x, where the service execution completed with success under a similar scenario. The DELogs in Strategy Narrowcast Server 8.x show:

Sample Code/Error
:2344:Service ID Execution ID Segment ID Segmentation has been canceled because the Pre-SQL statement returned an empty result
:2344:Service ID Execution ID Segment ID Service execution finished successfully.

As a result, the Strategy Narrowcast Server services with pre/post SQL statements returning empty result sets might start behaving differently after an upgrade from 8.x to 9.x.

CAUSE:

The difference between the behavior is because the GUI in Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x has changed, with the 'Empty result set' checkbox included within the 'Required' option. In Strategy Narrowcast Server 8.x, this checkbox was separate from the 'Required' section:

As such, the behavior in Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x is expected and is consistent with how the GUI shows the Service Execution Impact for pre/post SQL statements with regards to empty result sets returned.

ACTION:
An enhancement request has been logged to change the Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x GUI to have the same behavior as in Strategy Narrowcast Server 8.x. Contact Strategy Technical Support for an update on its status.
