Customers with very large metadatas may experience longer processing times when using ScanMD. Due to the amount of data to be analyzed, it may take additional time to load and analyze all the objects. This is a list of high-level suggestions to optimize ScanMD 8.000.008 performance in these situations.
High level overview of ScanMD 8.000.008:
- Supports 64-bit
- Supports simultaneous executions of the same common tests, represented in segments
- All analysis is processed on the computer executing ScanMD.
Segments:
- ScanMD 8.000.008 transfers segments of 1,000 objects over the network from the metadata to the client machine
- 1 segment can take up to 3 GB of RAM each on 64-bit machines
- Each segment is transferred over the network to the client machine
- This segment is loaded into RAM of the client machine and analyzed for known issues
- The amount of segments to be processed concurrently is determined by the user at runtime
With these key points in mind, there are some performance considerations for a very large metadata:
- Run ScanMD 8 on the fastest Windows 64-bit computer available.
- The RAM of this machine must allow up to 3 GB for each segment selected for concurrent execution. If 10 segments are analyzed at once = 33 GB of RAM must be available for the ScanMD process.
- The CPU should be around 5 physical threads for optimal performance
- ScanMD 8 must wait for each segment to be transferred, over the network, to the client machine. This can represent the biggest performance bottleneck for ScanMD if the network is not optimized. Review the network to be ensure a fast transfer rate.
- If the metadata is on SQLServer or hosted on a Windows machine, it is recommended to run ScanMD on that machine. This will remove the network as a bottleneck. At this point, only RAM and CPU would be potential performance bottlenecks.
- If ScanMD cannot be run on the same machine as the metadata, placing the client machine on the same network subnet may improve performance. Consult your network administrator for more information.
- With an very favorable configuration, 10 segments may be run at once for optimal performance
Review your network and machine capabilities with your local administrators to optimize your environment for ScanMD 8.
Always take into consideration that the size of the metadata is the biggest determining factor into the processing time of the scanner. Reducing the size of the metadata is recommended in cases where these optimization suggestions do not reduce processing time.
