"Cannot open TNSNames file" error message appears when attempting to connect to Oracle Database specified in a TNSNames file in MicroStrategy 9.x and 10.x

SYMPTOM:

When attempting to connect to an Oracle warehouse using a TNSNames file the following error may occur:

Sample Code/Error

Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLDriverConnect. Cannot open TNS Names file.

Additionally, it's been confirmed that the file exists as specified in the ODBC.ini file and that the user running the Intelligence Server process has Read/write access to it.

CAUSE:

One possible cause is an errant whitespace at the end of the line specifying the TNSNames.ora file location since the driver does not chomp off extra white spaces. This can be confirmed by attaching strace to the ODBC test tool(MSTRTODBCX) and attempting to connect to the warehouse as shown below:

Sample Code/Error

open("/opt/MicroStrategy/tnsnames.ora ", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

ACTION:

Remove the errant white space from the ODBC.ini file.
