KB38471: How to use a Hadoop file as a table in MicroStrategy through Hive without importing it into Hive as an explicit table first

Community Admin

• Strategy

For Hive/Hadoop large files can present issues when attempting to import into Hive to use as full tables. If these files are needed within Strategy then they must be available to the Strategy product as tables. There are steps that can be followed to make files available through Hive without first importing them to allow for Strategy to make use of full functionality against these tables without having to import them into Hive.
This will require making changes on the Hive database and not within Strategy.

The exact steps to follow are below.

  1. Identify the file location where the data file is stored (e.g. '/user/testuser/datafolder/data.txt')
  2. Open up Hive.
  3. Run a command similar to the following.

    SQL:
         CREATE EXTERNAL TABLE tablename (ID INT, DESC STRING)
         ROW FORMAT DELIMITED FIELDS TERMINATED BY '\001'
         STORED AS TEXTFILE
         LOCATION '/user/testuser/datafolder';

After running this the files should be available as tables in the Strategy Warehouse Catalog for import and use within datasets.
