KB38539: How to create a ODBC DSN for Composite 6.0 and 6.1 with the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server on an AIX or Linux operating system platforms

This technical note describes how to configure the Composite 6.0 and 6.1 ODBC drivers to be used with the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server on AIX and Linux.

Summary:
This technical note describes how to configure the Composite  6.0 and 6.1 ODBC drivers to be used with the Strategy Intelligence Server on AIX and Linux. The supported version of the driver to be used depends on the Intelligence Server version and the Operating System used. Users should consult the Product Readme or Technical Notes for specific version information. Users are also responsible for obtaining the ODBC driver from Composite and performing the installation.
To create a DSN to connect to Composite 6.0 and 6.1 is necessary to use the "driverConfig" utility found in the Composite 6.x client installation directory. The path to the utility is <COMPOSITE_HOME>/apps/odbc/bin. On Linux for example the COMPOSITE_HOME home suggested by the Composite Installer by default is '/opt/Composite_Software/CIS_6.1.0/'.
Important Note:  Users must use the "driverConfig" utility because it creates an xml file that is used by the Composite ODBC driver and that file contains host information for the Composite Server.  Without this file the user will receive a “host not found” message from the driver upon the connection attempt.
The following environment variables must be passed by the user in order to use the "driverConfig" utility.

COMPOSITE_HOME
LD_LIBRARY_PATH (Set this to the path of the lib directory in the <COMPOSITE_HOME>/apps/odbc/lib)
ODBCINI (Set this to a location that does not include the Strategy-installed odbc.ini file - typically this could be set to $COMPOSITE_HOME/odbc.ini)
ODBCINSTINI (Set this to the location of the Strategy-installed odbcinst.ini file)

1. Add the following entry to the odbcinst.ini file. This file is located at <MSTR_HOME_PATH> where <MSTR_HOME_PATH> is the directory specified as the Home Directory of the Strategy installation on AIX or Linux (default: /var/opt/Strategy). The user will need to add write permissions to the odbcinst.ini file first (chmod u+w odbcinst.ini). After adding the entry, save the file and remove the write permissions from this file (chmod a-w odbcinst.ini).

[ODBC Drivers]
….
Composite = Installed
….
[Composite]
Driver=<COMPOSITE_PATH> /libcomposite60.so
Setup=<COMPOSITE_PATH>/libcomposite60.so
host=
APILevel=0
CPTimeout=60

For Composite 6.1 ODBC drivers the path would be <COMPOSITE_PATH>/libcomposite61.so. Replace the <COMPOSITE_PATH> with the location of the installed Composite ODBC driver.  For example,

[ODBC Drivers]
….
Composite = Installed
….
[Composite]
Driver=/usr0/odbc/composite/aix/CIS_6.0.0/apps/odbc/lib/libcomposite60.so
Setup=/usr0/odbc/composite/aix/CIS_6.0.0/apps/odbc/lib/libcomposite60.so
host=
APILevel=0
CPTimeout=60

2. Change directory to the location of the "driverConfig" utility.  This is typically found in the <COMPOSITE_HOME>/apps/odbc/bin directory.
3. Set the appropriate environment variables in the current terminal as described above.  It is important to remember to set the ODBCINI variable to a location that does not include an odbc.ini file as the utility will create a new odbc.ini file and overwrite any existing odbc.ini file.  For this reason it is important to not set this variable to point to the Strategy-installed odbc.ini file.
4. Execute the "driverConfig" utility: ./driverConfig
5. If all of the environment variables have been set correctly the following menu will appear:

---------
Composite Software 6.0 ODBC Driver
Main Menu
0 Exit this utility
1 View configuration and DSNs on this system
2 Create, edit, delete or test a DSN
Enter command>

6. Choose option 2.

---------
Create, edit, delete or test a DSN
0 Return to main menu
1 Create an ODBC 3.5 DSN
2 Edit an existing DSN
3 Delete an existing DSN
4 Test the connection for a DSN
Enter command>

7. Choose option 1.
8. When prompted enter a DSN name and press Enter.
9. When prompted enter the host IP and press Enter.
10. When prompted enter the port number and press Enter.
11. When prompted enter the user name and press Enter.
12. When prompted enter the password and press Enter.
13. When prompted enter the domain name and press Enter.
14. When prompted enter the datasource name and press Enter.
15. When prompted enter the catalog name (if applicable) and press Enter.
16. When prompted to "Keep this information" check the information to see that it is correct and enter 'yes'.
If there are no errors a message will be displayed similar to the one below:

---------
Configure Administrator
Created file '/usr/odbc/composite/aix/CIS_6.0.0'
**Done

17. Open the odbc.ini file that is created by the "driverConfig" utility.  Copy the newly created Composite DSN into the Strategy-installed odbc.ini file so that the Intelligence Server can connect to the Composite Server.
18. After this it is necessary for the ODBC.sh file  in the MSTR_HOME_PATH/env folder to be modified to prepare the installation for loading the Composite ODBC driver.  In Strategy 9.3.0 and newer releases, the entries for the Composite Driver already exist in the ODBC.sh file as shown below. In some earlier Strategy releases (9.0.2 and 9.2.1), the following entries must be manually added to the end of the ODBC.sh file:

#
# ODBC Driver for Composite
#
COMPOSITE_PATH='<COMPOSITE_PATH>'
COMPOSITE_HOME='<COMPOSITE_HOME>'
export COMPOSITE_HOME
if [ "${COMPOSITE_PATH}" != '<COMPOSITE_PATH>' ]; then
 export COMPOSITE_PATH

 mstr_append_path LD_LIBRARY_PATH "${COMPOSITE_PATH:?}"
 export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
fi

The lines reading COMPOSITE_PATH='<COMPOSITE_PATH>' and COMPOSITE_HOME='<COMPOSITE_HOME>' should be modified to reflect the actual path. For the default installation paths on Linux for example these entries must be changed as follows:

COMPOSITE_PATH='/opt/Composite_Software/CIS_6.1.0/apps/odbc/lib'
COMPOSITE_HOME='/opt/Composite_Software/CIS_6.1.0/'
export COMPOSITE_HOME
