KB38760: Group by derived element the derived metric in document Detail Header section displays “- -” in MicroStrategy

This article describes an issue with derived metrics in detail header sections

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy, for a document with derived element in grouping area, the derived metric in dynamic text fields in Detail Header section displays as “- -” as shown below:

NOTE:
     1.    The report itself display properly when derived element in the grouping area and derived metric in the template
     2.    Remove the derived element in the group area, the derived metric in the document display properly.

REPRODUCING STEPS:
     1.    Navigate to 3-tier Tutorial Project, and build a report based on the Intelligent Cube “Actual vs Forecast Performance Cube”.
     2.    Add Attribute “Region”, Metric “Profit” and “Revenue” to the Report Template.
     3.    Replace Region with the existing Derived Element “Regions” which can be found in Public Objects\Reports\Strategy Platform Capabilities\Strategy OLAP Services\Derived Elements.
     4.    Add a Derived Metric “Margin”: in the definition (Profit / Revenue) and change the Cell Format to Percent with 2 decimal places.
     5.    Change the Evaluation Order to derived element before derived metric to avoid the derived metric displays null values.
     6.    Save the report as Derived Elements Dataset.
     7.    Build a Document base on above report
     8.    Add the derived element “Regions” to the Grouping Area
     9.    Place the dynamic text fields in the Details Header displaying Regions@Desc, Revenue, Profit and Margin.
     10.  Execute the document, the metric Margin (derived metric) displays '--'.

CAUSE:
This is working as designed. The evaluation order in the original report does not get copied to document’s Detail Header section.
The evaluation order for the report is "derived metric after derived element" as shown below:

ka04W000000Oha8QAC_0EM440000002DQ4.jpeg

But in detail header section, default evaluation order “derived element after derived metric” is followed.
Derived Elements follow the same logic as Dynamic Aggregation. With the default evaluation order, the Derived Metric is calculated before the Derived Element.  In this case, the metric is a Derived Metric and is not defined with operators such as Sum, Max, Min, Count non-distinct and Product which has secondary aggregation function, so the dynamic aggregation function is "Default". Therefore, Analytical Engine returns aggregation null whose null display string is set to "--" by default.

ACTION:
Move the derived metric from document Details Header section to Detail section.

WORKAROUND:
Change all the element list Derived Element to calculation Derived Element.
For example, if the definition of "East Cost" is Region in list {Northeast, Mid-Atlantic}, change it to a calculation Derived Element with {Northeast+ Mid-Atlantic}
