In MicroStrategy Office, images in documents, using http references, are not retrieved when the images are located in web or web services servers that require windows authentication and error is encountered "The link image cannot be display

SYMPTOM:

In Strategy Office, images in documents, using http references, are not retrieved when the images are located in web or web services servers that require windows authentication and the following error is encountered "the link image cannot be displayed. The file may have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Verify that the link points to the correct file and location". If Anonymous authentication is used instead, the issues are retrieved successfully and displayed in the document.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

In a Strategy environment:

  • In one web server A, set up windows authentication and verify that you have an image in a valid folder, .e.g. in Strategy Tutorial, you could use the image "1.jpg" in the images folder of the web server (\MicroStrategy\Web Aspx\Images)
  • In a second web server B, set up windows authentication for web services server and Strategy Office (you could follow technote KB9691)
  • In web server B, create a document and insert Image and reference it using the URL of the location above i.e. web server A, e.g. http://web-server-A/MicroStrategy/Images/1.jpg. You might be prompted to enter windows NT credentials, and the image should display:

Note: To verify that the location is accessible and windows authentication is set up, you could enter the above URL in the web browser of server B and you should be prompted to enter your windows credentials and image should display

  • Assuming that windows authentication was set up successfully in server B , launch Strategy Office and login with your windows credentials and run the above document--> you will see that image will not be retrieved and will receive an error

CAUSE:

This issue is caused by the second layer of windows authentication, at the web server level, where the image is located.

WORKAROUND:
Use anonymous authentication for the web server where the image being referenced is located.
