KB39285: After defining the dataset to be referenced by a dynamic text field in a Report Services document in Developer or Web 9.x - 10.x, only attribute elements for one dataset are displayed

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This technical note outlines a behavior observed after defining the dataset to be referenced by a dynamic text field in a Report Services document.

SYMPTOM:
After defining the dataset to be referenced by a dynamic text field in a Report Services document, users may note that only attribute elements from one of the datasets are displayed.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
It is possible to reproduce this issue in the Tutorial project according to the following steps:

  • Create three datasets with the Region attribute and the Revenue and Profit metrics, each filtering on a different Region:

    Dataset 1:

  • Dataset 2:

  • Dataset 3:

ka02R000000kcM5QAI_0EM440000002DLX.jpeg
  • Incorporate all three datasets within a Report Services document and define a text field using the following syntax {}:{Region@DESC}:

  • Execute the document in any mode and note that the Region name for the second dataset is displayed:

CAUSE:
This issue stems from the Intelligence Server making a compound join of all of the datasets used, so as to create a virtual dataset, which is then used to populate the document components.  This results in the first attribute element, according to ID, being displayed when the document is executed.

ACTION:
An enhancement request has been logged to request the ability to specify from which dataset attribute elements should be retrieved for display in a dynamic text box. Strategy will continue to investigate and post updates as soon as they are available.

WORKAROUND:
It may be possible to use selectors instead of a dynamic text field on the document, so as to be able to specify the dataset to be used in any particular case.
