KB39528: How is a metadata query deadlock handled inside MicroStrategy 9.x and newer?

Community Admin

• Strategy

This KB answers the question of how MicroStrategy handles metadata query deadlocks.

QUESTION:
How is a metadata query deadlock handled inside Strategy?
ANSWER:
A deadlock is a situation wherein two or more competing actions are each waiting for the other to finish, and thus neither ever does. Check the following external wiki article to find out more details about deadlocks:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadlock
When querying against its metadata database, Strategy is coded to detect deadlocks and will retry the transaction 3 times before aborting it. So in most scenarios, deadlocks in the Strategy metadata are overcome since the transaction will be retried 3 times. If in some extreme scenarios, the deadlock still occurs after the retry logic, then the transaction will be aborted. The impact to Strategy will then be that whatever transaction was experiencing these deadlocks will fail.
