KB40005: Transmitters do not show dependents in MicroStrategy 9.x

Community Admin

• Strategy

MicroStrategy has two objects that are used for Distribution Services: Transmitters and Devices. The transmitter is the type that the report/document will be delivered as, such as Email, File, Print, Mobile. The device is the child object, and is the format of the report/document that will be sent. Examples of this for email are Outlook, Webmail, Generic email, etc.

SYMPTOM:
Strategy has two objects that are used for Distribution Services: Transmitters and Devices. The transmitter is the type that the report/document will be delivered as, such as Email, File, Print, Mobile. The device is the child object, and is the format of the report/document that will be sent. Examples of this for email are Outlook, Webmail, Generic email, etc.

When a new device is created, you must select the Transmitter type that will be used. However, after creating this device, there is no way to see what the Transmitter type is.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new Transmitter named "Transmitter Test"
2. Create a new device "Device Test", and select "Transmitter Test" as the type
3. Try to delete the Transmitter Test. The following message should be seen: 'object can not be deleted because object with id xxx depends on it'
4. There is no way to see that "Device Test" is dependent on "Transmitter Test".

CAUSE:
This is a known issue with Strategy 9.x.

ACTION:
Contact Strategy Technical Support for an update on this issue.

WORKAROUND:
The following SQL can be used to find dependent objects.

  1. First find the Device ID in Strategy Desktop
  2. Run select * from DSSMDOBJDEPN where object_id = '<Device ID>'
  3. The DEPN_OBJID will be the Transmitter ID.
  4. Run SELECT * FROM DSSMDOBJINFO where object_id = 'TransmitterID'
  5. The name will be Object_name column.
