KB40422: Unable to remove attributes from a grid report after changing the evaluation order in an OLAP report in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x - 10.x

The following error message occurs:
 


"The functionality / report manipulation you are trying to use is incompatible with the report objects Evaluation Order settings. Please see documentation”.

 
The steps that are taken to obtain this error are detailed below in the 'STEPS TO REPRODUCE' section.
 
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
 

  • In Developer 9.4.1 create a consolidation (where one of the elements is a ratio of two other elements) in Tutorial for the Year attribute as follows:
         - Element 2008
               Year=2008
         -Element 2009
               Year=2009
         - ratio
           Element 2009 / Element 2008
  • Create a report with the attribute 'Country', the consolidation just created and the metric 'Revenue'.  Add Subtotals to the report/
  • Run the report and the result should be the same as the example below.

  • Change the evaluation order (Report Data Options --> Evaluation Order) to:
        - Total -1
        - Consolidation - 2

  • Remove an attribute from the grid (either Country or Distribution Center)
    Encounter the error message:

CAUSE
 
The reason for this warning message is that Consolidations are evaluated on the "dataset template" while subtotals are evaluated on the "view template".  Both templates exist on the same level.  However, once an attribute is removed from the grid, the report is converted to an OLAP report. As an OLAP report, the dataset template and the view template become separate entities which are evaluated at different levels.
 
 
ACTION / RESOLUTION
 
 
 
This behavior is working as designed.  In this scenario, only a change in the evaluation order will allow attributes to removed from the grid by evaluating the consolidation first.
