KB40467: "Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression" error message appears when executing reports in MicroStrategy Desktop 9.x-10.x after changing the Select Post String or Insert Post String VLDB properties.

• Strategy

SYMPTOM:

When changing the VLDB settings Insert Post String or Select Post String, it shows the valid SQL generated by Strategy 9.x-10.x.
In this example, the SQL preview includes a space between the SQL generated and the property value.

However, executing reports will result in SQL syntax errors:

Status: Execution failed
Error: SQL Generation Complete
QueryEngine encountered error: Execute Query failed.
Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLExecDirect. Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression 'pa11. = pa12. and
 pa11. = pa12. and
 pa11. = a13. and
 pa11. = a14.OPTION(MAXDOP 4)'. Connection String:..SQL Statement: select distinct pa11. AS ...
...
where pa11. = pa12. and
pa11. = pa12. and
pa11. = a13. and
pa11. = a14.OPTION(MAXDOP 4)

CAUSE:

This is a known issue with the SQL preview since these VLDB properties are appended directly after the SQL generated by Strategy.
It is sometimes required to manually add a space depending on the value set for the property like in the example above.

ACTION:

Manually add a separator space at the beginning of the  Insert Post String or Select Post String property value.
