KB40654: The behavior for grid display in a Document for text wrapping is different in Express Mode versus Editable mode when headers are locked in MicroStrategy Web 9.x.

SYMPTOM:

When the headers in a grid are locked, datasets wrap correctly in Editable mode as shown below:

However in Strategy Web, in Express Mode, they don't:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

Follow these steps to reproduce the issue.

  1. In Strategy Web 9.x create a new report using the Employee Analysis template.
  2. Put all of the objects in the grid.
  3. Save and convert the report into a document. The document runs into editable mode. Notice how under Region, "Mid-Atlantic" is word wrapped.
  4. Run in express mode.
  5. Word wrapping is gone.
  6. In Editable mode, use the column handles to change the width of Region, Employee, and Hire Date.
  7. Move the column handles to make the columns narrower, to keep "Mid-Atlantic" word wrapping.
  8. Now go to Express mode. Notice word wrapping works now.
  9. Switch back to Editable mode.
  10. Go to Properties and Formatting > Grid > Lock Headers.
  11. Apply and switch back to Express mode.
  12. Notice word wrapping is gone.

CAUSE:

This is a known limitation of Express mode in Strategy Web 9.x. Express Mode rendering is optimized for performance. Therefore, one of the constraints added was the inability to have rows with different heights when using locked headers.
ACTION:

Upgrade to Strategy 10; the Express mode replacement, Presentation mode, has word wrapping with locked headers.
