KB40774: How to duplicate the metadata of a project to a Microsoft Access file in MicroStrategy Developer 10.x

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

In some business scenarios, it is required to duplicate a project's metadata to a Microsoft Access file. The following procedure describes how to achieve this.

  • Create an empty metadata shell in a Microsoft Access file.

    • Create a DSN named "MS Access Shell" for Microsoft Access database with Strategy Connectivity Wizard.
    • Open Start -> Programs -> Strategy > Configuration Wizard
    • Select 'Metadata Repository and Statistic Tables' and click on 'Next'
    • Check 'Create Metadata Tables' only and click on 'Next'
    • Choose DSN 'MS Access Shell' as shown below and click on 'Next'

    • Click on 'Finish' to create metadata shell.
  • Add a new Project Source and point to the metadata shell

    • Open Strategy Desktop
    • Go to the menu Tools -> Project Source Manager -> Add…
    • Add a project source with the definition shown below and click on 'OK':

    • NOTE: The ODBC DSN 'MS Access Shell' is created in step 1.
    • Confirm the blank Login/Password with 'Yes'
    • In the Project Source Manager click on 'OK' to exit the window.
  • Duplicate the original project into the MS Access file

    • In Strategy Desktop, go to the menu Schema -> Duplicate Project
    • Select the project source of the original project to transfer
    • Login as Strategy Administrator as screenshot below and click on 'Next'

    • Choose one of the source projects and click on 'Next'
    • Select the destination project source which is 'MS Access Shell Project Source' in this example
    • Login as Strategy Administrator. The password is <blank> by default as shown below. Click on 'Next'

    • Optional - Rename the destination project and click on 'Next'
    • In Select Languages to Duplicate, keep the defaults and click on 'Next'
    • In Select objects to duplicate, keep the defaults and click on 'Next'
    • In the Process Options, keep the defaults and click on 'Next'
    • In the Viewing Options, keep the defaults and click on 'Next'
    • In the Log Options, keep the defaults and click on 'Finish'. Users may be prompted to overwrite existing log files. Confirm that questions with 'Yes to all'.
    • The duplication process may last for several minutes or several hours depending on the size of the project and on the hardware. Once the duplication is finished click on 'OK'
    • The metadata has now been transferred to the MS Access file named MS_Access_Shell.mdb created in step 1.

NOTE: As above procedure, the project in the original project source is duplicated to a Microsoft Access file.
