KB41009: Subtotals and Percent to Total metric get incorrect results with values double counted when executing report with overlapped consolidation elements in tutorial project of MicroStrategy Developer

Subtotals and Percent to Total metric get incorrect results with values double counted when executing report with overlapped consolidation elements in tutorial project of MicroStrategy Developer.

SYMPTOM:

Subtotals and Percent to Total metric get incorrect results with values double counted when executing report with overlapped consolidation elements in tutorial project of Strategy Developer  9.X.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

Follow the steps below to reproduce this issue in the Strategy Tutorial project:

  1. In Developer, create a consolidation Year_Con based on attribute Year. Element "2009" and "2009 and 2010" both contain Year=2009, as shown below:

  • Create a report with Category and Year_Con in rows and Revenue in columns. Insert a derived metric "Percent to Total Over Columns (Revenue)" based on metric Revenue.
  • Run the report. Values for Subtotals and Percent to Total Over Columns (Revenue) are not correct, as shown below:
ka04W000000uGD2QAM_0EM440000002D7t.gif

For example, total revenue for books for all years should be 650,192+1,989,903=2,640,094 while it is 650,192+868,206+1,989,903=3,508,301 in report. Value of Percent to Total Over Columns (Revenue) for Books at year 2008 should be 650,192/2,640,903=24.63% while it is 650,192/3,508,301=18.53%.

Cause:

Analytic Engine calculates revenue values for consolidation Year_Con with overlapped elements first, and then calculate subtotal and derived metric "Percent to Total Over Columns (Revenue)" with the double counted values as shown below:

ka04W000000uGD2QAM_0EM440000002D8J.gif

The evaluation order cannot be set to make Year_con calculated after Calculation of subtotal and derived metric finished because consolidation Year_con is in "Data Set evaluation order" section while subtotal and derived metric is in "View evaluation order" as shown below:

WORKAROUND:

Use derived elements instead of consolidation as steps below:

  1. Create an Intelligent Cube with Category, Year in rows and Revenue in columns as shown below:
ka04W000000uGD2QAM_0EM440000002D7q.gif

  • Publish the cube and create a cube report based on this Intelligent Cube. Run the report and create derived elements based on Year attribute with elements as consolidation Year_con as shown below:
ka04W000000uGD2QAM_0EM440000002D84.gif

  • Insert derived metric Percent to Total Over Columns(Revenue) based on Revenue and edit its level as Category as shown below:
ka04W000000uGD2QAM_0EM440000002D86.gif

  • Set the evaluation order as shown blow:
ka04W000000uGD2QAM_0EM440000002D8L.gif

  • Run the report and all values are correct as shown below:
