KB411601: 'The Web Server encountered an unknown runtime error' error message is seen when attempting to connect using Trusted Authentication to MicroStrategy Web 9.x

Community Admin

• Strategy

SYMPTOM:
Users who have previously set up Strategy Web 9.x for trusted authentication and set the trusted authentication to be the default authentication mode in Strategy Web 9.x may see the following message when attempting to connect to the Web Server directly and not using the trusted authentication (SSO) mechanism to authenticate themselves first.

The Web Server encountered an unknown runtime error.
(Invalid operation in authentication due to one of the following: connection to the database server is lost; no available memory; the configuration is in an inconsistent state)

CAUSE:
This error is seen by users connecting to Strategy Web, when trusted authentication is set as the default authentication mode on the Strategy Web server. The Strategy Web application expects the users credentials and authentication token to be passed from the SSO / trusted authentication server to the Intelligence Server, so that the user can be mapped to a Strategy object.

In this case, the user connected directly to Strategy Web, without being authenticated by the SSO / trusted authentication mechanism prior to this, and so the expected credentials are not present in the data passed to the Intelligence Server and the error shown above may be seen.

This error could also be caused if the user name/login is not included in the headers sent from the SSO mechanism to the Strategy Web server.

ACTION:
Users should first connect to the trusted authentication server / SSO server and authenticate themselves, before being redirected to the Strategy Web 9.x server. This is particularly important for Tivoli Access Manager based solutions where users must connect to the Tivoli Web Server with the URL including the Junction Name for Strategy rather than the Strategy Web Server directly.

Users should contact their Tivoli / Siteminder administrators for specific information on how to authenticate and connect to Strategy Web in their environment.
