“Find target process dead while sending a message” error occurs when subscribing a large file to a folder in MicroStrategy 9.x and 10.x

SYMPTOM:

In Strategy 9.x and 10.x, when subscribing a large report in zipped plaintext format to a local folder “Error message: (Distribution Services: Delivery Engine has an Exception.)” occurs in the failed delivery notification email as shown below:

Dear Administrator:
The following File delivery was not successful.
Delivery/update and destination information:
Run at: xxx
File location: xxx
File name: xxx
Error message: (Distribution Services: Delivery Engine has an Exception.)
Subscription Information
Subscription Name: xxx
Created by: Administrator
Report/Document name: xxx
Project name: xxx
Schedule: xxx

Note: If the delivered file is not compressed, the last error message “Transformation failed: Find target process dead while sending a message” does not show up in the delivery notification email.

In the DSSErrors.log, the following entries can be observed:

Quiting child process because of unknown exception.
Failed to write to pipe. System Error 0x000000E8 (232): --- The pipe is being closed.
Find target process dead while sending a message
Transformation failed: Find target process dead while sending a message

CAUSE:

This is a known issue with Strategy 9.x and 10.x.

The issue happens at the compressing file step, and is exposed when delivering a sufficiently large file. It does not matter if the file is delivered to a remote machine or local machine.

ACTION:

Contact Strategy Technical Support for an update with this issue.

WORKAROUND:

Enable bulk export and check the zip option during subscription creation. Refer to the technical note below for detailed steps on how to enable the bulk export feature:
KB36859 - How to configure a report for use with Bulk Export in Strategy 9.x.
