KB41577: "An object with name 'xxx' and type 'Report Definition' already exists in the destination folder" error message appears when saving an existing report in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x

"An object with name 'xxx' and type 'Report Definition' already exists in the destination folder" error message appears when saving an existing report in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x

SYMPTOM:

Whenever an already existing report is altered and then a save attempt is made the user receives the error below:

ka044000000kIMJAA2_0EM440000002D5H.png

"An object with name 'xxx' and type 'Report Definition' already exists in the destination folder"

CAUSE:

This occurred because the report name contained an em dash "–" such as a report entitled "Em Dash – Report".  Strategy does not consistently handle this character and so it is advised to not use it in the name of objects.

ACTION:

Rename the report to not include an em dash "–".  Regular short dashes do not encounter this problem so renaming the report from "Em Dash – Report" to "Em Dash - Report" will resolve the saving error encountered.

WORKAROUND:

If the em dash is required for some business case the users can "Save As" into a different folder successfully.  They will then be able to "Save As" again back into the desired folder successfully.
