KB41631: Analytical SQL statements are generated in report SQL view when drilling down the Custom Group using banding points in a report in MicroStrategy SQL Engine

This article notes a situation where analytical SQL passes are generated when drilling

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy SQL Engine, Analytical SQL statements are generated in report SQL view when drilling down the Custom Group using banding points in a report.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Follow the steps below to reproduce the issue with Strategy Tutorial project:

  • In Strategy Developer, at Database instance level, set the VLDB property of ”Custom Group Banding Points method” as the second option to use Case function.

  • Create a new Custom Group BandingP qualified on 'Order Count' Metric. Type the following bands, as shown below:
    1,5,30,100 with output level on Customer Leave the display option on default,

  • Create a report with the above Custom Group in the row and  metric ”Count of Customers” in the column.

  • Run the report in SQL view , note that Case function is used for the banding calculation, as shown below:

    Sql

    select pc01.CUSTOMER_ID  CUSTOMER_ID,
      when (ISNULL(pc01.WJXBFS1, 0) >= 30 and ISNULL(pc01.WJXBFS1, 0) <= 100) then 3
      end)  DA85
    into ##TSSW4BSTAOP001
    from ##TB6IIBZPAMQ000 pc01

  •  In the report, drill any bands in Custom Group to Customer, as shown below:

  • Run the report in SQL view again, note that the filter part uses BandingP function while the Custom Group part uses Case function. The setting only applies to the Custom Group calculation, as shown below:

    Sql
     [Analytical SQL calculated by the Analytical Engine: select CUSTOMER_ID
    from [previous pass]
    having BandingP(WJXBFS1, 1.0, 5.0, 30.0, 100.0) = 1.0
    ]

CAUSE:
This is a known issue with Strategy SQL Engine.

ACTION:
Currently this issue is still being reviewed for feasibility by our Technology team and it is not scoped for any upcoming scheduled Strategy release.
