KB41637: "HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized" error is received while using XMLA Test tool against Essbase, MSAS or TM1 sources

Community Admin

• Strategy

This article explains the situation where by default the MicroStrategy XMLA Test tool will try to connect using 'Integrated' authentication in its first attempt so, if it is not configured / selected, users can potentially receive the response "HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized".

DESCRIPTION
Users testing connectivity from Strategy against MDX data sources like Essbase Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Service or IBM Cognos TM1 can use a tool provided within the Strategy installation called XMLA Test tool. For additional information regarding this tool, users can refer to the article shown below:
https://community.Strategy.com/s/article/ka1440000009IjAAAU/KB14715-How-to-use-the-XMLA-Connectivity-Test-Tool-available-in
By default the Strategy XMLA Test tool will try to connect using 'Integrated' authentication in its first attempt so, if it is not configured / selected, users can potentially receive the response "HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized" in the first step.
However, after this attempt, the tool will automatically issue a second call to try to connect to the data source using the specified type of authentication.  The second response ("HTTP/1.1 200
OK") indicates that the connectivity has been successfully established.
ACTION
The appearance of the first error is expected and no action is required.  Shown below is a full example of the expected messages from the XMLA test tool including the "HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized" response.
