"Failed to start service. Error Code: -2147205287. Unable to open behavior file" error message appears when trying to start the Intelligence Server in MicroStrategy 9.x and 10.x

ka04W000000ObNLQA0_0EM4400000029gs.png

Failed to start service
Error Code: -2147205287
Error Message: Unable to open behavior file.

The following error message also occurs in the DSSErrors.log file:

[Kernel][Fatal][0x800f3F59] Unable to open behavior file.

CAUSE:

The error occurs when the behavior file has been corrupted or deleted.

The behavior file is an encoded file that is generated during installation and contains information about the license key and computer. It determines the behavior of the various Strategy components.

ACTION:

If a backup of the behavior file is available, administrators should restore the behavior file from the backup and restart the Strategy Intelligence Server. The behavior file is located at the following paths:

  • On Windows machines, \Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MicroStrategy\mstr.bhv
  • On UNIX machines, <MSTR_home_directory>/mstr.bhv

If no backup exists, it will be necessary to uninstall all Strategy products from the machine and reinstall.

WARNING:

Strategy does not support any manual modification of the mstr.bhv file. Do not, under any circumstances, make any changes to this file. The file is not in human-readable format, and any attempt to modify it will only damage the file further. Since those are user-initiated changes that are expressly discouraged by Strategy, they are not covered by any Strategy warranty.
